3 Easy Tips to Put Your Viral Marketing on Steroids

Viral marketing has been available for a long time now.

Most people really don’t know what the words ‘viral marketing’ really mean, and might have incorrect notions about the phrase. Still, the true meaning of the term is rather straightforward. The term ‘viral marketing’ was actually created by Hotmail.com and its investors, who developed the company using basic viral marketing methods. Another word for this type of marketing would be ‘word-of-mouth.’ There are a number of ways through which you can start to utilize viral marketing online, including blogs, social networking sites and message boards. Rather than taking the formal road towards advertising, this type of word of mouth aims at achieving a few different objectives:

The strength of viral advertising lies in its ability to self-proliferate; upon establishing a captivating objective, consumers automatically spread the message for you. Also, you only have to set up most of your viral marketing campaign at the beginning, but you’ll experience great rewards from it for months and years to come. Everyone wins with this strategy – your customers will be able to enjoy your products and you’ll receive the type of coverage usually reserved for the big guys. The method by which your business presents its advertising, along with the impression that it leaves on the viral audience, models the key element of marketing performance. People tend to share items that they feel are practical or helpful in some way. This is where the real advantage lies.

First of all, you have to realize that Viral marketing is not your traditional advertising. So don’t look at it as advertising in any way. It’s all about going the non-traditional way when convincing people about your product or service. Basically you have to look at it differently. People like to hear interesting stories that they can relate to, they don’t necessarily like to hear lectures. You want people to be thinking about the product so they will eventually talk to someone else about it. The regular advertising medium doesn’t follow this path. You are trying to establish a relationship with the people who are interested in your services or products, and that is what viral marketing is designed to do. By establishing a strong emotional connection, you’ll push the most important factor that drives people. Others will hear what they are saying and come to your website, and they will then sing your praises. It may be slow at first, but it will build up and allow you to reap major rewards over time.

Use this knowledge to position your product. Promote your product or services with a message that’s unique and interesting. Or you can put together a story that has some appealing and exciting events that can get people interested in your viral campaigns. How can you do this? Figure out how to pique your audience’s interest. Its also important to create a little mystery around your product or service. Therefore, you have to be able to give your story the potential for viral marketing by leaving some of it out. To achieve this, you have to keep your product/service a secret and let people get involved. This isn’t some sales pitch you’re creating; it’s a whole campaign that you want people to take forward with word of mouth. So be careful to pay attention and make sure that it doesn’t sound like you are attempting to “sell” anything to them.

While viral marketing by nature helps your product/service spread by itself, it still needs you,the marketer, to initiate the process. Basically, the momentum gained from viral marketing has to be started somewhere, and something has to keep it afloat once you’ve started your campaigns, which is where other marketing types come in. These other mediums could range from Television to Radio or any other forms of online marketing strategies. For example, you get the bloggers involved into it, so that they can write their thoughts about the whole campaign and give their opinion. Currently, there are a lot of major blogs in just about every market you might be able to think of, with thousands of readers. Leverage them and use them for your own benefit. This allows for people to discover your product on their own, and gives them reason to spread the word of your campaign. But remember, in order to get the most out of your viral marketing campaign you need to get creative with the marketing outlets you choose.
